As usual, insightful piece. Thank you.

It made me think of the start of my career (approx 20 years ago) when I worked for 3 consulting firms that claim, as one of their "core values", to "hire the best people".

That was the same literal statement for the 3 of them. I was young and naive, but the absurdity of it hit me even then!

My perspective is that every market opportunity is inherently local, even if it connects to a global strategy. You can't reverse-engineer success by starting global and working down. Instead, you need to ask 'How do we win here?' - in this specific market, with these customers, against these competitors. Only after answering that locally can you consider how it fits into a global framework. Bottom line: Where To Play and How To Win must be matched at the local level first.
